Job Summary

The purpose of the Sexton is to keep St. Paul’s buildings and grounds clean and orderly; perform basic preventative maintenance and repairs; and set up spaces for use as needed. The sexton’s role is also to communicate and keep the office Administrative Assistant, Rector and/or Senior Warden and Junior Warden advised of dangers or concerns about the condition and maintenance of buildings and grounds. The sexton will also keep and maintain a 30-day supply of regularly used cleaning and maintenance supplies.

Daily tasks

a. Sanitize and clean restrooms including toilets, sinks, and any other surfaces. Empty garbage cans and restock paper products.

b. Keep all church entrances (inside and outside) clear of debris/litter/leaves/salt.

c. Vacuuming/Sweeping in office main spaces and each room, and the entrance hall rugs. Check the kitchen and vacuum or sweep if needed.

d. Empty all trash bins from inside the building and place either in large trash bin outside or dumpster.

e. Monitor heating/cooling thermostats making sure they are turned on or off to appropriate pre-agreed upon temperatures

f. Close and lock all appropriate doors before leaving. Close and lock entrances, exits as required each day and after special events.

Weekly tasks

a. Tuesdays- open/unlock doors at 9:30 am for prayer group. Put tables and chairs up for youth group which meets on Wed evenings during Sept-May. And participate in staff meetings (currently every other Tuesday at 9:00 am).

b. Wednesday- mop restrooms and mop dining hall and kitchen areas when possible

c. Thursday- move tables and chairs in Gallery for Yoga group to meet open door at 9:15 am

d. Friday-vacuum nursery, Godly Play and art rooms, vacuum church, dust rails, wipe down window sills and set up Gallery with 2-3 rectangle tables and chairs around them, and large wooden table for coffee hour on Sunday

e. Monitor all lights and replace bulbs as needed.

f. Dry mop floors in church (with Swiffer)

g. Arrange chairs for services after conversation with Rector

h. Set up tables/misc. for special services as requested by Rector/Staff

i. Clean doors and windows within reach

j. Provide inventory list of needed supplies to office Administrative Assistant to be ordered by her.

Monthly or as needed

a. Report safety and repair issues to administrative assistant, rector or wardens

b. Assist in taking down and putting back seasonal decorations

c. Perform needed set-up and clean-up before and after weddings, funeral

services and other functions.

d. Check battery on Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in Gallery monthly, replace AED pads every 3 years.

e. Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs.

f. Buff and wax floors as needed, generally during least amount of foot traffic time

g. Shine church floors before big events (dust, mop, vacuum, wet mop, and

then apply shine)

h. Clean light fixtures

i. Serve as contact for technicians and tradespeople engaged to perform work on the Church property.

j. Change batteries for smoke detectors annually

k. Check exit sign lights throughout building twice a year

l. When leaves accumulate over the outside drains, remove outside window debris that covers them

m. Periodically Swiffer sacristy floor, altar area and front entrance

n. Maintain vacuum bags

o. Check mouse traps

p. Dust and vacuum library

q. Regularly check and observe boilers for unusual actions

Skills and experience

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

a. Education and experience -High School diploma or GED, with one to three years related experience or training.

b. The ability to read, communicate, comprehend and carry out instructions, short correspondence and memos.

c. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide units of measure.

d. The candidate for this position must have adequate reliable transportation.

e. The candidate must be a self-starter, capable of taking initiative while at the same time being responsible and accountable to other staff members with whom he or she will be working

Physical Demands

This position requires a person who can safely and successfully perform all essential job functions and responsibilities. This includes but is not limited to:

a. The ability to safely work with power tools such as drills, saws, mower, floor buffer and shrub trimmer.

b. The ability to climb steps and ladders as well as to bend, pull and push.

c. The ability to move and carry objects.

d. The ability to carry and lift up to 35 lbs.

Hours and compensation

This position will be for 15 hours per week. Candidates for this position must complete a required background check. The individual hired will report to the Rector and/or other staff as designated.
