Today’s news in the Episcopal Church - Episcopal Life Online.
On the calendar tomorrow, May 30, 2008:
- Women’s AA at 7:30 p.m. (in the Dining Room).
Today is a feria on the Episcopal Church calendar. The day is historically significant for the conquest of Mt. Everest on May 29, 1953.

The New York Times article reporting the achievement of Tensing Norgay and Edmund Hillary begins:
The British expedition has conquered Mount Everest, a radio message flashed from Namche Bazar to the British Embassy here said today.
The message said Edmond Hillary, a New Zealand beekeeper and mountaineer, and Tensing Norkay, the famous Sherpa guide, had reached the hitherto unscaled summit from Camp Eight last Friday.
The news of this success had to be rushed by runner from the British expedition’s base camp on Khumbu Glacier to the radio post at Namche Bazar.
It is understood here that this was the expedition’s third attack on the last slopes leading to the summit, a first double attempt having failed. Read the entire N.Y. Times article here.
An appropriate prayer today would be the following prayer for joy in God’s creations from The Book of Common Prayer - 1979:
O heavenly Father, you have filled the world with beauty: Open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all your works; that, rejoicing in your whole creation, we may learn to serve you with gladness; for the sake of him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
